This is the story of the chapel service at The Master’s College… wait, scratch that. This was the story of the chapel service. All that changed with the first song. So nevermind what happened during the rest of chapel: their band rocks! “Their band” is Team France, the rapping, worshiping, french-speaking, musical mission team. (Although oddly only one member actually speaks fluent french, Phillipe, the lead singer (center, with the microphone). No matter, really, each is clearly an expert instrumentalist, and another member whose name escapes me [also the percussionist and mixer, in the picture above, the one to the far left] takes over on the English lyrics.) Anyhow, it happens that I am studying french (have for about 7 years) and was at the time looking for a french/english rock band. Timely of them.

Perhaps a part of their appeal is that the group will also be traveling as mission team to France this summer. In Marseilles and Toulouse, Team France will be playing on street corners for a six week missions tour. Ahhh, jealousy.

They don’t have a website yet, or I’d link you to it, but I have ordered a copy of their first CD. Expect future posts. (See also http://masters.edu/GO )

I take it I should explain the relatively diminished frequency of posting around here. I’ve been camping since Friday, and tomorrow morning we’re flying to California -flying to California to scout out The Master’s College for my brother, the prospective student thereof. Now, I don’t know if I’ll be able to get a hold of a computer or internet access (roughing it old style, yo), so I’ll apologize beforehand if nothing new appears here for a couple days. We won’t be gone long, though, never fear.

As of today I’ve finally completed The Cornell Home Study Course in Bird Biology with a grade average of 91.6. Don’t have a lot to say here except that I highly recommend this course to any diligent student of ornithology as the next best thing to a college education in that field. Be warned though, the textbook is a massive 1248 pages, with an equally large test for each of the 10 chapters. For every inch of shelf space this beast consumes, however, it has easily reconciled by becoming my most utilized ornithological resource.

Summa Contra Banana April 21, 2008

Enter Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron with… er… a banana. But wait! Look closely now. This Musacid is more than just the grocery store variety of your tropical yellow fruit: this banana is “The Athiest’s Nightmare!”

….Or so Ray Comfort would like you to think. After all, is not the banana so perfectly crafted to the tactile elements of human perception? And indeed it is, with a non-slip surface, perforated wrapper, and a special tab for easy opening, the banana is no less than the work of supernatural designer? No?

Unfortunately science seems to be detrimental to his example. You see, Ray’s banana isn’t so much of a testimony to God’s handicraft as he would like: indeed the common yellow (“Cavendish”) banana cultivar (a.k.a. “The Atheist’s Nightmare”), testifies only to the fact of artificial selection having bred it from the originally rough and heavily-seeded wild banana, into the hybridized, grocery store variety. A simple Wikipedia search would have availed him much on the matter, as well as a little fore-thought.

Moreover, what of the rest of fruit-kind? Pineapples are rather lacking in all the amenities Ray mentions. Where is the easy open tab and perforated wrapper? And what of it fitting comfortably in my hand?

Just as a piece of advice: don’t play with your food, Ray, and don’t play with science either. If you’re willing to invest the time and research necessary to produce viable arguments, fine. But until then, stop making a mockery out of creationists. Stop polluting the blogosphere with your psuedo-scientific nonsense. As I’ve said before, I respect you as an evangelist, but as far as science -in the opinion of this blogger- you remain no more than a sounding brass and a clanging cymbal.

On the Age of the Apostles April 11, 2008

Have you ever wondered about the age of the apostles? ….No? …Well, I guess I haven’t either. Fortunately for us slackers, however, there are those who study the subtle nuances and hidden codecs in scripture. And then there’s my brother.

The rest of his bio aside he happens to be a wizard with the aforementioned, with bible codes, Hebrew texts and all that jazz. So, perhaps I should get around to the point in all of this. Well, he takes a passage about taxes (dig Matthew 17:24-27) and comes up with a relative approximation of the disciples age. Cool huh? It’s like this, the temple tax mentioned is only collected from those above the age of 20 (see Exodus 30:15) and since Jesus only comes up with enough money to pay for him and Peter (via the fish…) it would seem as if the other disciples are under 20. Verse 27 reads, “And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.” Interestingly, the other disciples are with him at this point, yet no mention is made of their provision. Now, that’s not the point of the passage, per se, but it an interesting suggestion, nonetheless. Perhaps there’s even a pattern here: God choses Mary and Joseph, aged in their teens. God choses the disciples, possibly of a similar age…. Young reader, what comes next? God chooses you?
